Movie Review

Written by T. Espinoza

When you see the trailer for a film like The Last Exorcism, with its grainy hand-held footage, no-name cast and a girl who looks like she could physically rotate her head better than any tricked-out Linda Blair doll, you get your hopes up. You think, wow, this could be the best of the Blair Witch and The Exorcist with a little Emily Rose thrown in. And should you be so astute as to catch the fact that it’s produced by Eli Roth (the writer/director of Hostel, not to mention the Bear Jew in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds), you start to get a real sense that things might get pretty gory pretty fast–deliciously, heart-poundingly gory.

Unfortunately, trailers can be misleading.

The film opens up with a glimpse of the flashy ministry of the fast-talking Deacon Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian), a handsome man of god who can get his practitioners hallelujah-ing about everything from the good word to banana bread. But for all of his fervor and pageantry, the deacon is having a crisis of faith lately, which isn’t good for someone who performs exorcisms. In fact, he thinks exorcisms are jokes that can become dangerous if they get out of hand, so he mostly performs them to do damage control with the hope of one day exposing them for what they are: psychosomatic manifestations of socio-religious anxiety (or something like that anyway). It’s for this reason he decides to let a film crew document his latest house-call, the footage of which is the film–a clever gimmick if it were still 1999.

As the deacon and film crew leave his sunny parish to travel to the deep South in response to a farmer’s plea for help, the tone changes from comically light-hearted to the kind of perverse paranoia that only the backwoods can inspire. It seems that the farmer’s livestock is being mutilated and the only logical culprit is his sweat-as-pie daughter. But the farmer isn’t without understanding; she is possessed by a demon after all. So when the deacon shows up with his bag of tricks, complete with demon sound effects and a smoking cross, to provide the family religious catharsis, he finds a well-intentioned father who loves his daughter very much (perhaps a little too much, but that gets addressed later in the movie).

What doesn’t get addressed very well in the film is the trailer’s promise of gory fun. Sure there’s a healthy amount of blood, some cow guts and a kitty that’s seen better days but other than that the film takes a cue from predecessors like Blair Witch and, more recently Paranormal Activity, by allowing the viewer’s imagination to run wild with a minimum of prompting, which is actually an admirable feat, but like I said, the trailer sets you up to expect something different. Even so, some of the freaky bits are pretty good and a lot of them play off the ghostly stare and otherworldly contortions of the farmer’s daughter, portrayed with haunting effect by newcomer Ashely Bell.  Her nocturnal possession turns her in to a writhing fiend, but it’s her vulnerable daytime innocence that draws you into her plight and sets you up for the scares.

Playing into the that innocence with conviction are Fabin, whose torn resolve between skepticism and religious duty helps you buy his character’s decisions (well until the end), and Louis Hethum as the father who desperately wants to save his daughter’s soul. But perhaps the real standout is Caleb Landry Jones as the farmer’s son and dutiful brother, whose lackadaisical country-boy affect is so underlyingly menacing; one could argue he’s the scariest character in the whole film.

With such strong performances going a long way to make the film believable, it’s a shame that the ending falls so painfully short. The “ah-hah” moment isn’t really impressive and the conclusion is too cockamamie and disorienting to be as rushed as it is those last few minutes. It left this cheated viewer damning the trailer back to Hell.

THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE

Disaster hits Millennium magazine when publisher Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) launches an exposé of the Swedish sex trade, leading to the deaths of two staffers and then to the police pursuit of a third — tech expert Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) — as the prime suspect. In Part 2 of the trilogy, based on the action novels of Stieg Larsson, the vampiric Salander vanishes as Blomkvist digs deep into a possible conspiracy.

WINTER’S BONE

In this noir drama set deep in Ozark territory, resilient teenager Ree Dolly (Jennifer Lawrence) goes on the trail of her missing drug-dealing father when his absence jeopardizes the safety of their family. The deadbeat dad has a critical court date pending, and Ree is determined that he make it — despite the objections of the insular Dolly clan. Director Debra Granik’s unflinching drama won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance.

Dinner for Schmucks

Steve Carell is an idiot!  I had no idea he could be this stupid.  He is a true-blue dummy.  I don’t mean literally, I’m talking about his role in his latest film.  Dinner for Schmucks goes on the list for one of the funniest comedies of the year.  Almost singlehandedly because of the “idiot” I spoke about at the beginning.  Carell goes for the hat trick with his third comedy of the year and very well delivers.

Re-teaming with Paul Rudd, Carell plays Barry, a taxidermist who dresses up dead mice and re-creates famous works of art for a hobby.  Rudd plays Tim, an equity executive who is on the verge of a very big promotion.  But in order to fit in with the higher-ups at his company, he must impress them at a special dinner that they hold once a month.  They each bring an “extraordinary person” to the dinner for entertainment and proceed to make fun of them.  Without the knowledge of their guests, of course.

Tim, needing a guest of his own, literally runs into Barry and his prayers are answered.  Between his interesting past time of decorating dead mice and his way of making a bad situation much worse, he seems like the perfect candidate for this special dinner.  All Tim has to do is make it through the couple days before the dinner now that Barry has inserted himself into his life.  Non-stop laughs would be an understatement watching these two’s dynamic unfold as Barry proceeds to innocently ruin whatever he gets his hands on in Tim’s life.

Barry’s character traits, childish curiosity, and just sheer ridiculousness (if that’s a word) reminded me of a crazy Jim Carrey in his prime.  When he was simply just being dumb in classic roles like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Liar Liar.  Although there are other outrageous characters in this movie, Carell takes the cake and smears it all over his face in the name of comedy.  Paul Rudd does a good job at being the sensible contrast to Carell’s idiocy.  Much like any other stories, the film wouldn’t have worked with one without the other.

Zach Galifianakis as Therman, Barry’s rival, and self-proclaimed master of mind control is also utterly hilarious in his scenes in this movie.  Probably my second favorite character behind Barry, placing himself and Carell on screen together can be classified as comedic gold.  Then there is Kieran Vollard (Jemaine Clement), a very un-contemporary and sexually eccentric artist whose work will leave you scratching your head searching for something to think about it.

With too many crazy characters to list here without giving away plenty of situations that will have you trying not to laugh while explaining the movie to those who haven’t seen it yet, the movie doesn’t have much room to become slow and boring.  The jokes are pretty rapid fire with plenty of “OMG” moments to go around; just ask my movie going partner for the evening.  I lost count how many times those three letters came out of her and the rest of the audiences mouths.

With Director Jay Roach leading the way, who also brought us Meet the Parents, there’s no surprise at all of the uncomfortable situations contained in the script.  Scenes that make the audience feel embarrassed for the characters themselves.  While still laughing hysterically at them of course.  The screen play by David Guion and Michael Handelman is based off of a French play-turned-movie written by Francis Veber titled Le Diner de Cons (The Dinner Game).  Same premise, idiots are invited to dinner and the fun begins.  A little fun fact: the dinner scene shot in the movie was filmed at the same location that was used as Wayne Manor in the Batman television series.

Steve Carell has turned in some pretty funny roles in the past; Michael in The Office, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, and of course the classic 40 Year Old Virgin.  But in terms of just outright 2 hours of crisp, authentic stupidity, I think this film might take home the trophy.  Sad to see him leave his boss’ position on The Office, but very glad to allow him to make me laugh while on the big screen, I give Dinner for Schmucks “4.5 dressed up dead mice out of 5.”

-“My wife left me because she said I couldn’t find her clitoris…I looked in her purse, but it wasn’t there”-“Why would you think it was in her purse?”-“Because usually everything she loses winds up in her purse somehow”

Comedy Jam

J. Anthony Brown & Friends

Township Auditorium Saturday, July 31

This Saturday, Columbia will have the distinct pleasure of welcoming home one of its more famous and successful native sons, J. Anthony Brown, as he brings his unique brand of stand-up comedy to the Township. The J. Anthony Brown & Friends Comedy Jam also features special friends Sheryl Underwood (who has performed on several comedy specials including those by Jamie Foxx and Martin Lawrence) and veteran comedian and Seinfeld chum George Wallace. Also scheduled to appear on the comedy roster: Huggy Lowdown, Sybil, Chris Paul, Myra J, Ms. Dupree, Annie Mcknight, and Ron G.

While its true J. Anthony has become synonymous as the co-host of the popular nationally syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show, he has also been the host of BET’s “Comic View” and has had the opportunity to hone his craft with multiple appearances on “Showtime at the Apollo,” “An Evening at the Improv,” and HBO’s “Def Comedy Jam.”

Like his contemporaries Steve Harvey and Earthquake, J. Anthony has been able to successfully cross comedic boundaries and appeal to a much wider audience than most “urban” comedians. But, a successful stand-up career wasn’t always his primary goal.

Don’t be fooled by the pimp wear –Brown has always been a funny man with a fierce entrepreneurial spirit.  He left Columbia in the 70’s to attend Morris College in Atlanta. However, upon falling $300 short on tuition, rather than pack up, J. Anthony did what he felt he had to do: he entered a local talent competition with the hopes of securing enough prize winnings to enter college. While he didn’t exactly knock the audience dead that night, the inextinguishable spark of standup comedy had been lit. He decided then to put aspirations of college aside in hopes of pursuing his newfound talent.

“The minute I started comedy, I knew I was gonna be funny,” he says. “I went on stage and bombed a lot until I got it. I’d go in a club and ask if they could stop the music and let me go on stage.”

Fast forward four decades and you will find a J. Anthony Brown that knows absolutely no limits, comedic or otherwise. He has his Shiva-like hands in a dozen different ventures including (but not limited to) his own comedy club in LA (the J. Spot Comedy Club); his own restaurant (J Spot); the J. Spot Clothing Store that sells his own designs of shoes, jewelry and accessories; his own hot sauce; as well as being a noted sketch artist with works featured in Washington, D.C. With all of this, he still manages to volunteer in his spare time for the American Diabetes Association.

In light of all of his numerous responsibilities, Columbia is fortunate to have him slow down long enough to make us remember what started it all -laughter. “I’m a comedian. Standup is my loyalty.”

Salt

Curse whichever critic proclaimed SALT better than Bourne. Although SALT boasts an all-star cast namely: Angelina Jolie(Wanted), Liev Schreiber(Manchurian Candidate) and Chiwetel Ejiofor(Serenity) this movie proved to be what I would call a ‘bench mark thriller’. However I will give it to Angelina that she worked with what she had.

As many of you no doubt know agent Salt(Jolie) is being accused of being a spy for the Russian government. In this movie she sets out to insidiously save the day while appearing to be an icy assasin, or is that exactly what she is…?

The kill joy for me was an oximoron; the immediacy of the story line and the peripheral action were what killed it for me. when I say immediacy I mean that the answers to our questions are automatically conceived within a matter of moments. There is no civility to the thought of pacing the story.

When I say peripheral action I mean that the fight scenes that we are expeting from Jolie are pourley filmed. It seems that some of the shots for the trailer were not decided upon for the final take. We get to see more masses of form than combat as in the camera being zoomed in where we would prefer a wide angle. The matter of the action sequences is a big part of why Bourne is not yet defeated, not to mention the fact that Bourne posseses a much more powerful and deep story line. In the end I should have scene Inception instead.

Inception Review

By Adam Cox

Breathtaking at moments, Inception is a film that will entertain you as well as make you think. Directed by Christopher Nolan(Prestige, Memento, The Dark Knight), and featuring an all star cast, this film is more than just good eye candy. Leonardo Dicaprio leads as Dominic Cobb, alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Caine, Ellen Paige, and Cillian Murphy, among others. The film takes place all over, in a world where we are able to explore the inner workings of our dreams.

Cobb and his partner Arthur(Levitt) are assigned to Extract secrets for clients from the dreams of competitors, and other important figures. They enter the dreams, and look for a place where something is hidden away. The film starts with them performing said task on a man named Saito(Ken Watanabe),  who in turn tells them he’d like to hire them himself. But this time, rather than extraction, he wants to try an inception. He wants to add an idea, not take one away. In turn, he’ll let Cobb return home after being away from his family for so long.

That’s about as far into the movie’s plot as I’ll go, because this movie needs to be experienced rather than simply summarized.  The trailers give next to nothing away, making the film surprising at every progressive turn. The film is long (around two and a half hours), but it utilizes every minute to its advantage. Every scene is bursting with plot progression, making it hard to follow at first, but you get used to it. I never knew what to expect next, and I suspect the rest of the audience felt the same way. I’ve never seen a film with this kind of a reaction. The audience was enthralled, literally on the edge of their seats. I could hear every laugh, every groan, and every cheer very clearly from all over the theater(and all at the right points too). The script is well thought out, very thorough, and very engaging.

The action is fun, and tends to be great eye candy with each new dream-based scenario.  The score is strong and epic. It’s heavy on horns, and can sometimes be startling, but it adds to the tension and build-up of each scene amazingly. The cast gives a great performance. The cinematography is beautiful. The CG is seamlessly applied to each scene, never looking fake or out of place. I don’t have a bad thing to say about the film.

Watch Inception. It will require you to pay close attention, but is fully worth it. If you want a movie not based around an existing property, that has a wonderful director/writer, a great cast, grand music, that doesn’t disappoint, here it is.

Movie Times At The Nick & Big Mo

Documentarians Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg provide an uncompromising glimpse into the personal and professional life of comedian and red-carpet mainstay Joan Rivers, a woman clinging stubbornly and steadfastly to the pop-culture bandwagon. Stern and Sundberg — whose previous film, The Devil Came on Horseback, covered the Darfur genocide — take a no-less-intensive approach to their subject here, taking a hard look at fame’s bitter toll.

HOUSE

Unaware that evil spirits have taken over her invalid aunt’s isolated country house, Oshare (Kimiko Ikegami) and six schoolgirl friends arrive for a visit — only to face a slew of preposterously freaky events in Nobuhiko Obayashi’s 1977 psychedelic nightmare. As the girls begin vanishing one by one, the survivors encounter ravenous furniture, homicidal firewood, a possessed piano and other absurd and violent entities.
